Most precious metals investors assume they’re paying fair market value. In reality, many are sold “exclusive” coins with steep premiums that have little connection to true value.
So-called “exclusive” coins marketed as rare
or collectible but often come with steep premiums over their actual metal value. Promoted as “limited edition,” many lack true rarity and have soft resale demand, making them harder to liquidate.
Many companies don’t show product prices online — a deliberate tactic to mask excessive fees and commissions buried in your invoice.
Some companies demand payment before confirming your purchase price — a major red flag that puts your retirement savings at risk.
Most competitors charge commissions when you sell back your metals, quietly eroding the value of your investment over time.
Before you buy (or even if you already have) see exactly what you’re paying for your precious metals with our fully transparent, 3-Step Review process:
Upload your precious metals invoice, quote or purchase order.
One of our senior analysts will review your transaction line-by-line and manually calculate pricing, spreads, premiums, and fees against current spot prices and market conditions.
We’ll walk you through a clear breakdown of what you paid versus current market value. If your pricing is competitive, we’ll tell you. If not, we’ll show you where the differences are and what you can do next.

How to protect your retirement with gold?
Yes, Orion Metal Exchange has a dedicated IRA department that is well-versed in the Gold IRA set-up and/or rollover process. This includes offering in-depth knowledge about relevant IRS guidelines, approved precious metals criteria, custodial coordination, and the paperwork required to streamline the transfer of your retirement assets into a self-directed Gold IRA. Orion’s IRA department is unique. Unlike other precious metal companies that only assist with establishing an account, Orion’s IRA department provides IRA customer service for the life of your account.
Your Gold IRA representative should clearly explain all fees before you open a Self-Directed IRA account, including setup, administration, custodial, storage, shipping, and insurance costs. Some companies may also include hidden fees, transaction charges, or significant markups on the metals themselves. Orion provides custodial fees in writing and prides itself on full price transparency. And there is no additional cost for shipping and insuring your IRA precious metals.
Yes. Gold IRAs are self-directed individual retirement accounts governed by federal tax law and the IRS under Internal Revenue Code Section 408(m). These regulations establish strict standards for eligible precious metals including purity requirements, approved storage, and custodial handling for IRA inclusion.
Yes, a Gold IRA offers the same tax advantages as a traditional IRA, including tax-deferred growth, contribution limits, withdrawal rules, and required minimum distributions (RMDs). Its key distinction, however, is that you own tangible physical assets rather than paper-based investments. So, a Gold IRA can help diversify your portfolio and protect it from market volatility and dollar depreciation. In addition, you’ll always know where your physical metals are stored for additional peace of mind.
A traditional Gold IRA allows contributions with pre-tax dollars, and a Gold Roth IRA contribution can offset your annual taxable income. With a Gold Roth IRA, contributions are made with after-tax dollars, and qualified withdrawals and future appreciation, are tax-free. You can also roll over funds from an existing 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), etc., or a traditional IRA into a Gold IRA without immediate tax penalties. And holding precious metals within a Gold IRA may offer greater tax perks than acquiring them outside of an IRA, where gains are generally subject to capital gains taxes.
IRS-approved gold for a Gold IRA must meet strict purity standards of at least .995 fine, or 99.5% pure. Eligible assets include select bullion coins, bars, and rounds produced by government mints or approved refiners that meet IRS standards for authenticity and condition. Popular IRA-eligible products include the American Gold Eagle, American Gold Buffalo, Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, British Gold Britannia, and approved gold bars.
Precious metals held in a self-directed Gold IRA must be stored in an IRS-approved depository that meets strict federal security, insurance, and compliance standards for retirement assets. While your gold, silver, platinum, or palladium remains fully allocated to your account, IRS rules prohibit account holders from taking personal possession of IRA-held metals. So, Gold IRA assets cannot be stored at home or in a personal safe while they remain inside the retirement account. However, investors also have the option of receiving their RMD in physical precious metals.
Much like traditional IRAs, Gold IRA holders can withdraw money or metals from their self-directed retirement account at age 59½ without an early withdrawal penalty. Prior to that age, a 10% penalty will be assessed by the IRS. Note that withdrawals are still subject to ordinary income tax regardless of age. By age 73, Gold IRA holders must take required minimum distributions (RMDs) each year, or tax penalties will again be assessed. Gold IRA holders can also receive delivery of precious metals to satisfy annual RMD requirements.
Dealer reputation is critical when opening a Gold IRA because the dealer helps coordinate the account setup, precious metals purchase, secure storage, and ongoing account support. And not all gold dealers operate with the same level of transparency or integrity. Some firms charge excessive premiums, add hidden fees, or promote non-IRA-eligible metals that may not meet IRS requirements. Orion provides customer service for the life of your Gold IRA account. In addition, every Orion purchase is backed by an exclusive commission-free buyback program for added flexibility and peace of mind.
