Things You Didn’t Know About Fort Knox
While the James Bond classic Gold Finger did a good job to introduce everyone to Fort Knox, a lot of people don’t know much about it other than it being a large fortified vault that stores gold. In this post, we talk about fort Know and the things that can motivate you to start storing gold at home!
Fort Know Is Near a United States Army installation
The actual name of the fortified vault is the U.S. Bullion Depository; however, it got its name from being near an army installation called Fort Knox. The positioning in Louisville, Kentucky, makes sense considering the amount of gold in the building.
Fort Knox has an astonishing 147.3 million ounces of gold bullion. With one ounce being traded at slightly over $1,600 at the time of this writing, the building has gold deposits that are worth almost $ 300 billion!
Has impenetrable Security
The facility was built for $560,000, using 670 tons of structural steel, 4,750 tons of reinforced steel, 16,000 cubic feet of granite, and 200 cubic yards of concrete. The roof is so strongly built that it is bomb-proof. Its vault door weighs more than 20 tons and is 21 inches thick. This helps make it impenetrable against any drills, blow torches, and even explosives.
This is why original copies of the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights, and Constitution, were placed in the facility when there was a threat that the capital could get bombed during World War 2.
Even Presidents Don’t Know the Combination
To enhance security even further, the entire combination is not known by anyone, not even the President of the country. Instead, the information is divided up among several people whose identification is itself classified.
Visitors are not welcomed in to the facility which is why there are a lot of conspiracy theories regarding it. What’s more surprising is the fact that the building has its very own police. To get inducted into the Mint Police organization, recruits receive special training on how to guard the premises.
