The Great Masquerade: Rosland Capital Unmasked

How can a precious metals dealer earn a spot on a list of the “Best Gold IRA Companies” with millions of dollars in customer orders outstanding and only days away from filing for bankruptcy?

The answer can be found within the realm of promotional review sites, sponsored content, and affiliate marketing. Some websites and news publishers present themselves as independent reviewers. They have the hallmarks of investigative journalists and consumer advocates but in reality, they receive compensation from the companies they recommend. So, many of the high marks and accolades are bought and paid for.

When financial incentives outweigh objective evaluation, a positive review can create the appearance of credibility even when it doesn’t reflect a company’s underlying business practices or financial health. And when it comes to investing your retirement dollars, this lack of transparency can cost you dearly.

Unfortunately, the online review ecosystem has become a masquerade where paid marketing impersonates independent journalism and sponsored product recommendations are easily mistaken for objective financial guidance.

When “Best” Isn’t Always the Case

On June 24, CBS News published an article titled “Best Gold IRA Companies and Investing Advice to Know Now,” describing Rosland Capital as a company that “caters to investors” and is known for its “educational outreach.”[1] The recommendation gave the impression that Rosland was a reputable and trustworthy Gold IRA provider.

Behind the scenes, however, the precious metals dealer was facing severe financial distress. As gold prices climbed, the company struggled with declining profitability, inventory shortages, and an unsustainable fulfillment model. Just eight days after the CBS News article was updated, Rosland Capital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Court filings later revealed millions of dollars in customer claims for precious metals that had been ordered but never delivered.

The Rise of the Online Review

The online review industry has evolved considerably since Consumer Reports established the gold standard for independent product testing some 90 years ago. Its engineers, scientists, and researchers evaluated products, brands and services without advertising or manufacturer influence to help consumers make educated buying decisions.

Today, online reviews, editorial rankings, and customer ratings shape nearly every customer purchase. Whether you’re shopping on Amazon, reading Google reviews, or searching for the best company to buy gold from, digital recommendations have become the new word-of-mouth.

But not all reviews are created equal. Many “Top Gold IRA Companies” lists and investment review sites are supported by affiliate commissions, paid promotions, and advertising partnerships … blurring the line between independent analysis and promotional marketing.

When you’re choosing a Gold IRA provider, investors deserve more than paid rankings, sponsored recommendations, and affiliate-driven “best company” lists — they deserve objective research, transparent disclosures, and trustworthy information about the company they choose to safeguard their retirement savings.

The Cost of Getting It Wrong

When it comes to online reviews gone wrong, Rosland Capital is a cautionary tale. According to court filings, customers are seeking to recover more than $60 million in undelivered precious metals. Yet earlier this year, Retirement Living awarded Rosland Capital 4.4 stars, stating:

“Rosland Capital gives investors clear information. This helps them decide if a Gold IRA fits their financial goals… Rosland Capital’s specialists help clients choose the right precious metals. This keeps their IRAs compliant with IRS rules.”[2]

Last year Rosland appeared on “best company” lists published by Moneywise, Business Insider, and Benzinga. Yet in 2025, they were already struggling with shipping delays, fulfillment backlogs, mounting customer complaints, and growing operational challenges.

Unfortunately, consumers often mistakenly assume that 5-star reviews, high ratings, and “best of” rankings reflect a deep dive into the company’s business ethics, operational practices, financial stability, and customer service. In reality, these articles may be driven by affiliate commissions, revenue sharing, or other financial incentives — meaning readers who believe they’re reading an independent evaluation may really just be reading marketing spin.

Here’s How to Protect Yourself

A misleading review or “best company” list can lead to a costly mistake. And when your goal is protecting your retirement savings, choosing the wrong precious metals dealer can undermine the very peace of mind you’re trying to achieve.

Here are some Rules of Engagement to keep top of mind when evaluating and deciding the best company to buy gold from:

  1. Don’t be persuaded by just one review. It’s important to read multiple gold IRA investment articles, features, and consumer reviews to get a clearer picture of how a company conducts business and interacts with its customers.
  2. When purchasing precious metals, consider several dealers. Be sure to compare at least three or four precious metals companies to assess product pricing, transparency, customer service and delivery benchmarks.
  3. Try to look beyond the marketing. Dig a little deeper by reading BBB reviews, checking professional accreditations, and researching a company’s online reputation.
  4. Pick up the phone and ask questions. There’s no better way to “vet” a company than to speak with them. Call and ask for cost breakdowns, spot check their prices, and inquire about their shipping and delivery timelines.

Every masquerade ends when the masks come off, and the players are revealed. The same should be true when evaluating a Gold IRA provider. Look beyond the rankings, question the recommendations, and verify the facts for yourself. Because when it comes to protecting your retirement savings, credibility should be earned … not purchased.
